On yet another heartbreaking beach walk, I came upon many pipefish washed up and dehydrating in the sun. This one is most probably a wide-body pipefish (Stigmatopora nigra).
Pipefish are very close cousins of seahorses and leafy seadragons, and just as enigmatic in their behaviours. They are almost impossible to see in their natural habitat when diving among seagrass beds, and I’ve never really captured good images of them.
This is not the place I would have chosen for an image of a pipefish, and I am sad to share this one in this way.
