Living in Ireland has provided many firsts for me and my dives with Inbhear Sceine Kerry Sub Aqua have been no exception.
I’ve experienced new underwater sights and sounds with my favourite Southern Australian ‘usual suspects’ being replaced with an entirely new cohort of marine species I am eager to make my acquaintance with.
For the time being at least I’m acclimatising to the 10 degC water temperature, and still tuning my gear, but a couple more dives should see most of those issues sorted (aside from the cold).
For now at least I can share another first, it may not be anything spectacular but here is my first published image from under Irish seas, the Edible Sea Urchin (Echinus esculentus).

Every body seems to make a fuss when ever we experience a ‘Super Moon’, that full moon in which the perigee of its elliptic orbit brings it closest to the Earth and hence larger in the sky.
Nobody pays any attention when the moon is at its apogee, when it’s 15% smaller, colder, lonely and waiting to come near to the earth again!
Stop me anthropomorphising now! The moon’s temperature does not change and the rest is just nonsense. Still nobody ever says, ‘Wow! There’s a ‘Micro Moon’ moon tonight!’.
So, … meet Mini Moon! Last night’s tiniest moon of the year.

I love night photography, its challenges and the reward of capturing the feel of urban lighting.
With the iconic Glenelg Town Hall clock tower, beachfront Friday nightlife and the ferris wheel in full motion the scene was set for a great photo opportunity. Set up the tripod, plan a set of HDR exposures and capture some images. What could be easier?
Last night was an extraordinary night with the temperature around 30 degrees all night so I suggested to the family we head out for an evening on the water and maybe I’d bring my camera along just in case.
Here a half a kilometre off Glenelg beach rocking about in a little boat there was no stable platform for a tripod and no opportunity for a set of HDR exposures but the view was so lovely I needed to at least try. This single hand held (in a rocking boat) shot at 1/80s was the best I could do.
Regardless it was a fun evening with my family so a bit of photography was simply a bonus.

‘It stands in the air like it just don’t care!’
With the track closed due to an incident, in came the Huracan to wait it out.
The moment it came to a stop and that growling engine cut, a shot of compressed nitrogen to the four inbuilt jacks lifted the beast into the air.
With the wheels off the ground those sticky rubber tyres remain conformal in temperature and in shape ready for the track again when the all clear is given.
In the mean time, ‘It stands in the air like it just don’t care!’ says everything!

The temperature climbed to 40 degreesC today and with 38 degrees predicted for tomorrow.
For now the Gilman wetlands have plenty of surface water with hundreds of waterfowl taking respite from the heat. It will however be interesting to watch this place change over the coming summer months.
For now this Gilman cluster of pelicans are just happy to be in the water.

Finally the winter gloom is beginning to fade, the days are getting longer and the temperature beginning to edge up.
Little by little Spring is making its way into into our world giving tantalizing hints of a Summer to come.
Not that you can tell any of this looking out into a Henley Beach sunset.

The Smooth Stingray, Dasyatis brevicaudata, grows up to 2m across and 4.3m in length making it the largest of all Australian stingrays. This fellow who we dubbed 'Mr Ray' was at least 1.5m across and was the highlight of our first dive in Edithburgh last Saturday. Mr Ray was quite curious about us and buzzed us a few times during the dive usually by sneaking up from behind and scaring the daylights out of us!
This first dive set the scene for a great underwater photography course with Mark, Bel, Peter, Jennifer and myself. With the recent hot weather we have been having here in South Australia the water temperature is way up. 25 degC made for almost tropical diving and all of us lamented our limited air and camera battery life. We all could have stayed underwater the entire weekend!
Until the next post, take care out there and keep diving ( if that's what you do! ) ...Robert

The last 6 weeks has seen a dramatic change to the water temperature over in Edithburgh. I mean really dramatic! Six weeks ago I recorded 12C degrees and this weekend we recorded 18C. That's 1C per week. Winter is officially over!
Sadly I was not able to take any photographs this trip as I had a very large class of new divers who I will add are all now certified open water divers. Congratulations to Belinda, Sandi, Peter, Jenni, Claire, Harry, Cherrie, Scott, Kerry and Dave. Welcome to a whole new world of scuba diving! Thanks also to Brent for racing around keeping everyone under control and to Jennifer for being the wonderful host she always is and for posing for this photo taken back in May.
Until the next post, take care out there and keep diving ( if that's what you do! ) ...Robert

The Blue Ringed Octopus, Hapalochlaena maculosa, is one of the deadliest creatures in the sea! Its powerful venom can easily kill a human despite its diminutive size of less than 12cm.
Although these creatures are a relatively common inhabitant here at Edithburgh, they're not often seen as they hide during the day and come out at night to hunt. This guy seemed only slightly annoyed as the bright strobe captured this image before crawling away at a leisurely pace to hide under a nearby rock.
The weekend was great with the water temperature still at 19 even though the days were a chilly 15! A good friend Paul joined us for one of the days and he made quite a find too..., but I'll leave that for another post!
Due to repeated requests I have upped the resolution of my photos but am using more compression to keep the size down. Please let me know what you think.
Until the next post, take care out there and keep diving ( if that's what you do! ) ...Robert

It's Getting Cold In The Water
Well winter is now here with a vengeance and I guess it's not exactly news but the water is now officially COLD! I took a class into the ocean in wetsuits on the weekend and we all survived but that hot tomato soup between each dive was really appreciated! So how cold is it? Here's a look back over my local diving for the last year and as you can see, it's COLD!
